Osaka Port construction Episodes by Sakishima Chiruto

Reading the magazine “Port of Osaka” (Part 4)”Osaka Port construction Episodes” by Sakishima Chiruto

”Osaka Port construction Episodes” was serialized 13 times (No.211-223) over a two-year period from July 1995 to 1997. The author, under the pseudonym “Sakishima Chiruto,” was Hideo Ohnishi, former director general of OPA and chairman of the OPPA. The author writes, “I would like to touch on Johannis de Rijke and other pioneers of the Osaka port construction, and pick up port construction projects and related stories with reference to port construction history book and other sources. The headings of each series are as follows.

(13) Technological Changes at the port construction /Breakwater Construction /Construction of Mooring Quay

These Episodes describes in detail the historical background and economic situation of Osaka port construction from the Edo period to the Meiji period, including shipping, trade, and newly reclaimed rice field development. The book also provides an explanation of how Osaka Port was constructed from both technical and economic perspectives, using specific statistical data, drawings, and other materials. Many of the books cited in the book are also valuable, such as “The Past and Future of Osaka Port,” “A Side History of Osaka Port Construction,” and “Talking about the Past of Osaka Port: A Roundtable Discussion” by Dr. Jinichiro Matsunami, a doctor of law (Vol. 7(7), 15(3), and 27(1-2) of “Port and Harbor” by the Japan Ports Association, respectively. ), etc., will also be helpful for a better understanding of the situation. After reading through the book, I was again surprised by the author's broad and deep knowledge, as long-standing questions and things that had been unclear became clear.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the Port of Osaka, to those who make their living from the Port of Osaka, and to those involved in the construction and operation of the Port of Osaka.

This volume is available to read on the OPPA (Osaka Port Promotion Association) website, as follows.
